Annotation
The existence of a wave function for one of a set of N subsystems is analyzed. It is shown that, even in the case of noninteracting subsystems, none can have a wave function in the ordinary sense. A generalized wave function is introduced which can be used to describe any subsystem of any system, and the relation between this function and the genealogical coefficients and the density matrix is determined.
