An experimental investigation is made using an interferometric method of the state of xenon in front of a shock wave propagating in a channel of square cross section in the range of Mach numbers M = 10-25 for initial pressures of 10, 25, and 34.5 mm Hg. It is established that the prefrontal zone is disturbed mainly in the region of the walls of the shock tube. The disturbance is in the form of a sudden change in compression.
