It is shown that the change in the elastic moduli S$_{11}$, S$_{13}$, S$_{14}$, S$_{33}$ and S$_{44}$ of crystalline quartz irradiated with fast neutrons can be satisfactorily explained using a model which takes into account the reduct ion in the crystal phase due to an increase in the fraction of the amorphous phase, effective heating of the crystal matrix, and the action of negative stresses proportional to the content of the amorphous phase.
