This study of statistical links between the heights of equivalent terrain and the depths of the mantle surface (М) for different regions on earth estaЫishes the nonlinearity of the transfer of load onto М and back. Knowledge of the direct and backward regression functions makes it possiЫe to separate the equations of overall core equilibrium into two equations, whose solution yields the optimal compensation depths that minimize а functional that depends on the anomalies in the density and stresses in the crust and upper mantle. The distribution of anomalous masses and stresses in the crust and mantle is also determined.
