Influence of complex formation on the threshold for stimulated raman scattering in solutions

Influence of complex formation on the threshold for stimulated raman scattering in solutions

N.I. Rezaev and M.B. Tabibi

Moscow University Physics Bulletin 1977. 32. N 1. P. 20

The thresholds for stimulated Raman scattering of the basic vibrations of pyridine in solutions with active solvents have been studied. Specifically, experiments were carried out with methyl, ethyl, and n-propyl alcohols; water, formic acid, acetic acid; and a neutral solvent, $ССl_4$. The complex formation due to hydrogen bonding strongly affects the threshold for stimulated Raman scattering of pyridine in the solutions. The concentration dependence of the threshold for the scattering lines with frequencies $ν_{1A}=998÷1007 сm^{-1}$ и $ν_2=1030 сm^{-1}$ has the characteristic minimum. These lines include emission from molecules in complexes.

A comparative analysis is made of the efficiency of various methods for extracting energy from the active medium of a laser. The optimal characteristics of linear and multiple-pass cavities and amplifying systems are determined; the distributed energy loss and absorption at the mirrors are taken into account. Multiple-pass traveling-wave amplifiers permit an adequate energy extraction, approaching the extraction in the laser cavity, even in the case of active media with a small linear gain.

Moscow University Physics Bulletin 1977. 32. N 1. P. 35

Monochromatic scattering is studied in a semi-infinite 0 ≥ z ≤ ∞ multicomponent medium with a scattering coefficient σ and an extinction coefficient k which are functions of z with σ/k≠const. The cases of large and small inhomogeneity gradients are analyzed. A perturbation theory is worked out in terms of the number of scattering events by the inhomogeneity, introduced into an originally homogeneous medium with σ/k=const. All the scattering events in the original medium are taken into account exactly.

Turbulence in stratified flows

Turbulence in stratified flows

Moscow University Physics Bulletin 1977. 32. N 1. P. 58

It is shown in the example of the water flow beneath the ice cover in Lake Baikal that a boundary layer forms near high density gradients. The turbulence structure of this boundary layer is similar to that of the boundary layer at a smooth solid wall. For boundary layers of both types there are typically logarithmic regions in the profiles of the average velocity. The profiles of the basic turbulence characteristics measured in the water layer beneath the ice differ from those corresponding to plane confined flow. These differences can be explained by taking into account the influence of dynamic stability on the turbulence characteristics of water masses.

One form of the differential equations for the elements of a hyperbolic orbit

One form of the differential equations for the elements of a hyperbolic orbit

V.M. Chepurova

Moscow University Physics Bulletin 1977. 32. N 1. P. 65

Differential equations are derived in a very general form for the elements of a hyperbolic orbit which is an intermediate orbit for a point mass moving in the gravitational field of a compact planet. The orbit is constructed on the basis of a symmetric version of the problem of two fixed centers. The only information available about the perturbing function of these equations is that it is of a gravitational nature.

Moscow University Physics Bulletin 1977. 32. N 1. P. 70

Synchronous oscillation of parametric generators is analyzed on the basis of the method of slowly varying amplitudes for the case in which the nonlinear element is turned on repeatedly over a period of the subharmonic oscillations. When the nonlinear element is turned on repeatedly, the bands of Internal self-synchronization and division decrease with increasing value of n, the self-synchronization order, more rapidly (~ 1/n^3/^2), than In the case in which the nonlinear element is turned on only once (~l/n). The decrease is nevertheless weaker than the decrease in the bands upon the formation of combination frequencies at a gradual nonlinearity.
