Production of porous alumina (PA) layers by electrolytic anodizing of aluminum foil at room temperature and studies into their structural and optical properties are discussed. Birefringence in such layers is measured and compared with the theoretical value calculated in the effective-medium model. At wavelengths comparable with the period of the PA structure, a photonic band gap is observed, changing its position as the angle of incidence of the probe radiation on the layer is varied.
