The thermomagnetiс effect in cobalt-flanganese alloys

The thermomagnetiс effect in cobalt-flanganese alloys

R.P. Vasil'eva, S. Yazliev, and Ya. Kadyrov

Moscow University Physics Bulletin 1977. 32. N 3. P. 1

Measurements are reported for the Nernst - Ettinghausen thermomagnetic effect and the specific resistance in Co-Mn alloy containing from 5 to 20% Mn at 300-800°K. The anomalous Nernst - Ettinghausen field is compared with the anomalous Hall field. It is concluded that the conduction electrons involved in the kinetic phenomena are polarized and that the position of the Fermi level alters with the composition in these alloys.

The vavilov-cherenkov effect for a source moving at a speed greater than that of light in vacuum

G.M. Maneva (Bulgaria)

Moscow University Physics Bulletin 1977. 32. N 3. P. 5

It is shown that substantial emission occurs when a source moves with a velocity in excess of that of light along a planar boundary between two media provided that the conditions in the media are appropriate. This applies for any media having ε less than 1 and for vacuum.

Formulas are derived for the transmission coefficient, width of the transmission band, and other characteristics of an interference filter on the assumption that the absorption in the layers is weak. Various types of filter system are examined, and the best compositions are indicated.

Moscow University Physics Bulletin 1977. 32. N 3. P. 18

A study has been made of the effects of the inertial term in the equation of motion for a dislocation; conditions are defined under which that term may be neglected with a substantial effect on the motion. A possible role for the inertial term for motion near a precipitate is discussed.

Response of a self-excited oscillator to biharmonic input

Response of a self-excited oscillator to biharmonic input

A.V. Ivanov

Moscow University Physics Bulletin 1977. 32. N 3. P. 22

A self - excited oscillator with hard limiting is subject to two harmonic inputs equal in amplitude and having any frequencies; a method is given for defining the synchronous ranges in terms of the frequencies and amplitudes. Numerical results are presented together with a physical interpretation. The method is readily extended to the case where the spectrum of the input consists of an arbitrary number of equidistant components, i.e., a harmonic input with any periodic modulation.

Spectrum transformation for a composite signal in a uhf electron-beam device

V.I. Kanavets

Moscow University Physics Bulletin 1977. 32. N 3. P. 27

A method is presented and illustrated for numerical examination of the processing of a multifrequency signal in a UHF electron - beam device, which extends various existing particular approaches in the theory of multifrequency nonlinear processes. The input spectrum may consist of several components separated by some fundamental frequency, and each of the components in turn may contain numerous spectral lines similar in frequency. The flux is replaced by a discrete model composed of charged elements. The equations of the nonlinear theory are written in terms of a method based on separate consideration of the vortex and Coulomb fields.

Moscow University Physics Bulletin 1977. 32. N 3. P. 32

A method is presented for calculating the distribution of the high - energy galactic proton component near the Earth, which provides the local energy spectra. The method is readily realized as a computer program. Results are presented for certain cases.

The theoretical pattern of orographic perturbations in a two-layer atmosphere

V.N. Kozhevnikov and N.N. Zidlev

Moscow University Physics Bulletin 1977. 32. N 3. P. 38

A theoretical picture is presented of the orographic perturbations in the atmosphere, which tend to be smoothed out by the stable stratosphere. A solution for the nonlinear two - dimensional case is used in the calculations. The atmosphere is assumed to be incompressible, while the behavior is assumed to be adiabatic, with the stratosphere bounded at the top by a rigid horizontal wall. A singularity on the z axis is used to represent a mountain ridge as a localized feature. New data have been obtained on the interaction between the troposphere and the stratosphere, and a comparison is made with the results from earlier studies.

Some estimates of local variations in ozone level in a polluted atmosphere

Some estimates of local variations in ozone level in a polluted atmosphere

P.P. Pavlov and A.Kh. Khrgian

Moscow University Physics Bulletin 1977. 32. N 3. P. 45

Calculations are presented on the shape and size of the zone in the atmosphere where the ozone concentration is reduced on account of contamination with oxides of nitrogen. It is shown that the local effect of the contamination is small and short - lived, but that oxides of nitrogen taken globally form a persistent catalyst that progressively reduces the ozone level in the atmosphere. However, predictions on the latter effects are difficult because the available values for the photochemical reaction constants are very imprecise, as are the values for the levels of various minor components, in particular atomic nitrogen.

Correlation effects in the theory of hopping transport, general relations

Correlation effects in the theory of hopping transport, general relations

I.P. Zvyagin

Moscow University Physics Bulletin 1977. 32. N 3. P. 50

A balance equation for electron transitions is obtained, with allowance for corirelation of the electrons at the same center, in the framework of the Hubbard model. A procedure is indicated for the introduction of a small temperature gradient in the kinetic equation for hopping transport. It is shown that the conductivity problem amounts to finding the conductivity of two three-dimensional branched networks of random resistances. Under certain conditions these networks may be considered quasi - independent.

G.P. Dzhotyan and Yu.E. D'yakov

Moscow University Physics Bulletin 1977. 32. N 3. P. 56

Theoretical results are presented on induced Raman scattering for multimode pumping in the linear state and in the saturated state; it is shown that the spectrum of a monochromatic Stokes signal can be broadened in multimode pumping. The effects of such pumping on the conversion factor are examined, together with the scope for suppression of induced Raman scattering by interference.
